In Brief

Severin Wucher (* 1976) is a Berlin/Leipzig based graphic designer, specialized in Information Design, Editorial Design and Visual Systems. Beyond his job as an Art Director for Integral Ruedi Baur Berlin, he teaches, as as an Interim Professor , Information Design at the Burg Giebichenstein—University for Art and Design, Halle (Saale) and as a Lecturer in the Information Design Class at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin, UdK) with Prof. Erik Spiekermann.

Detailed

After having finished his vocational training as a typesetter in a publishing house and an internship with Konrad Kunz—a student of Swiss graphic designer Armin Hofmann—, Severin studied at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig (Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst, HGB) from 1999 to 2004.

In the System Design Class of Prof. Ruedi Baur he designed projects in the fields of Information Design and Editorial Design, such as the temporary signage system for the City of Leipzig as well as the website and university calendars of the HGB. As his diploma project, Severin designed a comprehensive research documentation book about »The law and its visual consequences« (»Das Gesetz und seine visuellen Folgen / La loi et ses conséquences visuelles«), which was released by Lars Müller Publishers in 2005 and awarded with a red dot Communication Award as well as an iF Communication Design Award Gold.

After his studies, Severin worked as a Senior Designer with Prof. Rayan Abdullah at Markenbau Berlin / Leipzig, a design agency specialized on Corporate Identity and Corporate Design. There, amongst other projects, he was in charge to design a compendium about »Pictograms and Icons« for Verlag Hermann Schmidt, Mainz.

Since October 2004, Severin has been working as Assistant Professor in the Information Design Class at the Berlin University of the Arts (Universität der Künste Berlin, UdK) with Prof. Michael Klar, since October 2008 with Prof. Erik Spiekermann. Severin took teaching assignments at Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa/Mexico and the University of Applied Sciences Potsdam (FH Potsdam). He takes part in the teaching team for the International Master Course »Design Journalism«, which is conducted by Prof. Masayo Ave at the Estonian Academy of Arts (Eesti Kunstiakadeemia) in Tallinn/Estonia.

Beyond his professional focus on Information Design, Visual Systems and Typography, Severin has been researching about German Graphic Design during the last years and got involved in some cultural exchange programmes. Together with Beijing-based Designer and teacher Gao Yi, Severin recently published the »PingPongProjekt« compendium about recent Graphic Design education at German universities. PingPongProjekt is a german-chinese exchange programme for design universities and professional designers.

Severin plays piano and pipe organ, loves good food, coffee houses, literature, music—and travelling. Whenever he returns to Berlin and sees the warm and bright »Blutorange« color (RAL 2002) of the Berlin underground line U2, he is assured that being a designer is a very nice thing.
